We stumbled upon a cute little festival this past weekend. It was the first-ever Mission Sunflower Festival in Mission, KS.
It was our last weekend of having my husband around again until graduation, so we were looking for something different and fun to help entertain our kids. We weren’t sure what to expect since this is the first time for this festival, but our kids had a blast! It started Friday night with food trucks and live music, which we did not go to. Saturday morning started with a very small parade. Our kids are used to the kind of parade you go to and come away with a gallon ziplock bag full of candy. I think they each got 4 or 5 pieces, but it was cute and they enjoyed it.
After the parade concluded, we walked up and down the downtown area of Mission and the kids got to play all kinds of fun little carnival games. The kids were rewarded for playing with a little prize.
In my opinion, candy would have been a much easier option as the kinds of things handed out end up in the trash on mom “cleanup” days. I do this when my kids are gone to school or playing at friends’ houses.
Shh, don’t tell my kids. They have no idea I routinely clean the junk out of their rooms for them. Anyway, they thought it was cool and enjoyed the games.
Of course there were a few food trucks there again Saturday. And we had to get shaved ice. The Mission Market was also open which had some fun tables but nothing to interest a four-year-old and seven-year-old.
The rest of the morning was filled with a sunflower seed spitting contest and getting their faces painted. The fun only lasted a few hours, but was totally worth it and the kids really did have a blast. If you have kids over the age of 10, I would guess they would get bored pretty fast.
For us, this was a win. I hope next year’s festival grows and is even more entertaining. Hitting this one got me excited for other festivals coming up in the KC area. Which ones are you excited for and would recommend to us?
